As the cameras begin to roll, were showing a clear sky staring up through a few branches of tree’s, most of which now bald from the changing seasons. Slowly a single leaf is pricked off its branch and begins to make its descent toward the ground. As the camera follows, we slowly get a quick distant glimpse of a row of beaten up, ran down homes. The leave falls to the concrete street, as a foot then steps onto it and remains motionless. The camera is rested on the individuals black boots, and slowly rises up revealing a pair of light blue jeans, with a designed tear in the right knee. As it continues, we see a black jacket, with a gray hood hanging out of the top. His hands buried in his pocket, as we hear a deep sigh.
” *sigh* Well….”
The man revealed now as the camera pans back showing off his full structure, showing Joey Legend. He stares at the home to the left, pauses, then turns to the one on the right before slowly putting his focus on the middle home. The once golden number “40” hanging with the “4” upside down, and the “0” on the cement stoop both worn down and extremely tarnished at this point. Joey slowly makes his was up the stoop and pauses at the broken screen door, at another dark green door with chipped off white pieces shown underneath. The windows around the front of the house, fogged with dust and dirt as Joey removes his hand from his pocket, and begins to pound on the door.
*Knock!… Knock!… Knock!*
The big green, chipped door slowly jars opens, and a loud creak is heard as it opens to a run down interior. The couches torn and stuffing shown hanging out of it, as the carpet has large stains and tears throughout it. Joey looks inside, before slowly taking a step in. He covers his nose with his forearm as he steps in and realizes the terrible odor coming from inside. He takes a few more steps inside as he notices a couple of dead cats on the floor. A group of flies swarming around the lifeless animals, as he then sees spilt bowl of cat food, and the begins to smell the scent of rotten milk, along side, the animal corpses and build up of the mold from within. Joey finally has seen enough, and retreats out the door slamming it shut. As he stares up to the sky, eyes closed in deep thought he drops onto his buttocks, onto the front stoop and stares blankly forward now shaking his head repeatedly.
” What the fuck happened here!?”
Joey seems unable to accept what he’s seen as he continues to question what he’s just witnessed. Suddenly, we hear a branch crack and the camera pans right as Joey jerks himself in the direction of the snapping branch. An elderly man, in gray sweatpants, and a heavy brown jacket approaches him. The mans, baldhead reflects off what the sun can get, as his can drags on the concrete. He approaches Joey and stares for a moment, shakes his head and takes a seat next to him with an achy groan as he does so.
” Its been far, far too long kiddo… far too long.
Joey stares at the man for a moment not entirely sure what he’s talking about as well as confused at the fact to whom he might be. The old man places his hand onto Joey’s knee and continues on while Joey still seems lost in the clouds.
”You shoulda kept in contact with them, they moved outta here bout, oh.. 3 maybe 4 years ago. Wasn’t easy for em’ either. First the father lost his job at the factory. Then the mother looses her job, couldn’t do much for them little ones. Was a rough road for em’ especially when their eldest was sentenced. Two years in the state penitentiary for assault. “
The old man turns to Joey and nods his head removing his hand as Joey turns to his with a small tear in his eye. He shakes his head in disbelief not truly understanding it all.
”It wasn’t meant to be like this. Things just didn’t go the way I had planned with my career. I was becoming someone, I was being noticed, and suddenly one night, one false accusation from that damn stripper, and I’m locked up for two years, and my family up and moves? Where… Do you know where they went? Where they might be?”
”Well if I recall correctly the old man got a stead job working for a bank, and the mother is now a stay at home mom. Their doing well sonny. They must’ve known you’d be back sooner or later because they had asked me to let you know something. Not to look for them.”
”Joey looks at the man in shock. His breath taken back and he still seems uneasy about the sights seen before now adding to the fact his family wants nothing to do with.”
”Your mother and father were… are good people. They wanted the best for you son. What happened wasn’t easy for them and especially the little ones who looked up to you as a role model. It wasn’t easy at all. Your mother wanted me to tell you change is never a bad thing, and from my experience we all need to experience a lot of change in our lives, to get to where we really wanna be. Maybe this wasn’t meant to be a bad thing. Maybe they want you to do what you were meant to do and not have the guilt of leaving them 5 years ago like they left you now. Maybe this is where you turn is all around. I’ve heard the television set say your making a return to wrestling after 2 years it’s a tough thing to do go away from what you love for an extended period of time, and try to come back. Do you think your ready?”
”I’ve worked out and kept in shape since day 1.”
Joey turns his head toward the man and then looks down to the ground.
”I’ve wanted to do right by everyone else since I got out. I’ve turned my life around. I don’t party. I don’t go out. I don’t do anything but hit the gym. Wrestling is not only my career it’s my life. Since my parents thought it was time to leave I’ve got nothing holding me back anymore. Nothing to keep me back from reaching my goals, and no more guilt in my heart. I resigned with SNME last week. They want me to wrestle at this months pay per view, and for once in my life .. I’m scared.”
”Son, that’s natural. Your finally going back out there after a 2 year hiatus what did you expect? But lemme tell you something boy, when you walk out and hear those fans all over again, it’ll be like day 1 when you first stepped out and all that fear, of failing, and rejection, and everything will be gone. It’ll be you, and that ring, and those fans, then and only then will you remember what its like to be doing what you love to do, and being where you wanna be.”
Joey looks over at the man and gives him a smirk and then stands to his feet. He reaches out to the man and shakes his hand as the old man smiles happily back.
”Thanks. I gotta get goin, I gotta meet with some people and get ready for this pay per view. You… you keep on giving those words of encouragement. It’s been an honor.”
Joey slowly removes his hand, pauses then walks away from the older man on the steps. The camera pans back to the older man as he watches Joey walk off into the distance.
